Why I Ran for Trustee

I was elected as a trustee to the Edmonton Public School Board in the municipal election of 2010. This was a natural and organic transition for me given my previous work on not for profit volunteer boards and serving as school council chair at my children's schools. I have four fabulous children, three boys and a girl. Their ages are 25, 24, 21, and 18 years old. My children all graduated from Edmonton public schools. Their school journeys have all been great experiences. My eldest son is an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR). Second son is currently attending SAIT and is in the Welding Engineering Program with a 3.94 GPA! My third son is a third year electrician apprentice. Last but not least, my newly graduated daughter (Queen Elizabeth

H. S) works 2 jobs and is still figuring out life (like us all). I am truly a proud mother ❤️

During my 7 year tenure as serving as a Trustee, I have had the honour of delivering many speeches, many of which are at high school commencement ceremonies.  Most recently in June, my youngest, and only daughter just graduated. What a thrill of a lifetime to be on stage with her as she and I both delivered speeches to her graduating class! She did a fabulous job as class historian and delivering a toast to the parents.

I am also a certified life coach, this has served me well in my role as trustee.  It has given a me deeper insight and understanding into the term Social Capital. Investing in people and worthy causes iis a big part of who I am and gives me a tremendous amount of personal satisfaction. True wealth is found when being service to others.

It's been my honour to serve you for  the last 7 years as your Trustee. My 4 children have been attending Edmonton Public Schools for the last 20 years. I have a clear understanding of the issues that face students, parents, staff and community.

Diversity and inclusion are important  to me. All children need to be supported, accepted and helped throughout their educational journey in order to be successful.

In The News

"I had the great pleasure of serving with Cheryl on the 2010-2013 Edmonton Public School Board. She is an exceptional team player. She listens well and works respectfully and collaboratively with her fellow Trustees to "get things done". She is not afraid to introduce and lead change. In this rapidly changing world she has all the attributes to effectively manage education and be responsive to public concerns. A vote for Cheryl Johner is a vote for good governance."

Dave Colburn

EPSB Board Chair, 2010-2012

"I’m delighted to endorse Cheryl Johner to be re-elected as your public school board trustee. As a former two-term trustee myself, I represented a north side constituency bordering Cheryl’s and was fortunate to sit beside Cheryl at public school board meetings. I witnessed first-hand Cheryl advocate for the best needs of public education, but also for those needs particular to Edmonton’s north side.  Whether it be at public board. school-related events, or addressing particular needs of her constituents, Cheryl work tirelessly to improve our students’ public education. Voting to re-elect Cheryl will help ensure that an experienced and committed trustee will be re-elected to serve the best interests of students and advocate for the specific needs of north-central Edmonton."
